The catchment

Geology: mainly Carboniferous Limestone with Millstone Grit outliers, with significant Boulder Clay cover. The stretch from Middleham to Westwick is Millstone Grit Series, though extensively covered by Alluvium. Rural, predominantly grassland catchment draining from moorland Pennine headwaters. No known catchment changes.

The station

Velocity area station. Low flow control is exercised by the sill of Kilgram Bridge 70m d/s. The bridge piers present a sufficient obstruction to cause critical depth, even at low flows. Road bridge acts as a weir at the very highest flows.

How it measures flow

Good measurement of high flows; some floodplain storage over the left bank, but all flow is gauged through the section. Daily and peak flows rated by current meter at a cableway. Two peak flow ratings applied across period of record. Reasonable fit to available gaugings. Flood Studies Report grade A1.

Fairly natural regime, small PWS abstraction to Thornton Steward immediately upstream of the gauge.
