Flat-V weir in a steep Pennine catchment with a natural regime.

The catchment

Steep Pennine catchment draining to the Aire, developed on Millstone Grit, with extensive Boulder Clay cover. Largely moorland with rough grazing the principal land use. Continuing increase in urbanisation through period of record in the lower catchment (Crosshills).

The station

Concrete flat-V weir (14m wide) in widened channel upstream of confluence with R Aire.

How it measures flow

All flows contained, no known bypassing. Backing-up from the River Aire (confluence <100m downstream) causes drowning at high flows; d/s levels monitored but processed flows assume modularity - downstream water levels indicate that there was a hydraulic gradient over the weir for all AMAX values (where data were available), but not some POTs. Theoretical peak flow rating applied across period of record. Good fit to available gaugings.

Flow regime

Natural regime. No known artificial influences.

The flow record

Tree on weir affected data in Mar/Apr 2004, period in Oct 2006 affected by silt partially blocking stilling well, suspect rise in May 2008 for same reason, along with period Jul-Oct 2015. Level may be under-recorded on 31/10/2000, the downstream gauge recorded a level 0.3m higher than the upstream gauge. Full period of record peak flow data reviewed and released in September 2022 (WINFAP Files v11).
