The catchment

Mixed geology of Upper Carboniferous, coal measures, very little superficial deposits. Predominantly rural catchment, mixed agriculture and woodland with urban development near gauging station. No trace of original course of River Dearne.

The station

Compound broad-crested weir (12m wide) with central notch 3.9m wide and 3.658m long formed in weir crest, flanking weirs (0.23m above weir) and float well constructed August 1959. Slightly curved in plan, weir drop of 2.4m. Weir crest broken May 1967, repaired December 1967. Cableway added in 1999.

How it measures flow

Considered likely to drown only in extreme events - only known occurrence June 2007. Some bypassing on left bank at around 45.56 mAOD (2.2m stage) to storage. Rarely bypasses over the right bank. Two peak flow ratings applied across period of record. Theoretical rating for daily and peak flows originally developed using physical model with current meter gaugings. Rating revised in 2016. Gauged to a very high level in June 2007 but measured peak 0.75m above this gauging. Flood Studies Report grade A2 in absence of any other information, 1975 now A1 to 1.3m and grade B above.

Daily gauge readings commenced in June 1953, continuous flow records from March 1960. Extreme flood event in June 2007 well above any previous known floods. Period between 1953 and 1959 rejected due to unknown provenance of data. Full period of record peak flow data reviewed and released in August 2021 (WINFAP Files v10).
