The catchment

Upper Chalk largely covered mainly with semi-pervious Boulder Clay and some sands and gravels. Predominantly rural catchment, mainly arable land.

The station

'Essex' profile (modified Flat V Crump) weir with low flow side weir and high flow rated spillway. D/s water level recorder to allow for drowning. Station removed from peak flows dataset in August 2024 (WINFAP Files v13).

How it measures flow

Drowning compensated for using d/s water level recorder. Rating potentially overestimates flows below 0.6m but this is slight. One rating applied across period of record.

Flow regime

Gw-influenced regime. Since 1976, adjustments for gw abstractions for PWS and industrial abstraction from surface water are no longer made to the gauged daily mean flows. Minor effluent returns may affect flow.
