About this gauge

Non-standard shallow V weir gauging a natural, high relief catchment in the northern Lake District. Flow record contains large gaps.

The catchment

High relief, natural catchment in northern Lake District; broad main valley below 200m, flanking fells exceed 700m. Geology principally Skiddaw Slates, with Borrowdale volcanics on southern watershed and granite boss in the south. Extensive Boulder Clay overlies the geology with alluvium within the river valley and peat on upland reaches. Land-use rural and moorland.

The station

Opened April 1969 as a velocity-area station with gabion basket low flow control which was prone to erosion and drowning. A non-standard 13m wide weir was built in 1986. Non-standard shallow V concrete weir was constructed 1998, reduced by 0.2m in 2008.

How it measures flow

Significant bypass flow on the right-bank floodplain from around 2.2m. Weir drowned at higher flows. Cableway present to measure in bank flows. Three peak flow ratings applied across period of record, the pre-1998 rating is a consolidation of multiple early ratings, the most recent is valid from July 2008 after lowering of weir. Top-end ratings are from hydraulic models.
