The catchment
Largely impermeable catchment (London Clay/glacial deposits). Rural headwaters but substantial urban development around lower reaches.
The station
Essex profile (modified Flat V Crump) weir in 9.5m wide section, operated as a rated section. Used for both Water Resource and Flood Incident management. Only gauging station on the Ingrebourne river, approximately 7km upstream of confluence with the Thames.
How it measures flow
All but exceptional floods contained. Operated as a rated section but rating based on modelled equation for Essex weirs. Model-based calibration assumes modularity; however, non-modular flow can occur as low as 0.4mASD depending on downstream conditions. Rating estimates of modular flow thought to be reasonable but tendancy to overestimate below Q70. No gaugings beyond QMED. One peak flow rating applied across period of record.
Flow regime
Runoff increased by effluent returns but reduced by industrial/agricultural abstraction. Minor net augmentation of runoff through transfer from River Beam. Reservoir(s) in the catchment affect runoff.
