The catchment
Impervious (London Clay) catchment. Pymmes Brook rises on Enfield Chase but the catchment is now dominated by urban land use.
The station
Crump weir (crest width 6.16m) in a concrete trapezoidal channel. Installed in 1972 a few metres upstream of the original station (Alcazaar 38025). The original station was commissioned in 1954 and operated as a rated section.
How it measures flow
Theoretical crump weir formula used to calculate flows since the weir was built. Crest tapping and tail levels suggest the weir remains modular throughout the flow range. Station performs well at low flows but too few gaugings at mid to high flows to confirm levels of uncertainty.
Flow regime
Pre-1965 runoff substantially enhanced by sewage effluent (now treated outside the catchment). Currently no significant abstractions or discharges. Natural to within 10% at Q95.
The flow record
Original rating superseded in 1963 by a new discharge table and the old records were corrected. This was replaced in 1981 by one which took into account the trapezoidal nature of the channel. Data from November 1972 to 1981 was recalculated and the new rating was adopted since 1982. Flows corrected for weir drowning since 1982. Full period of record peak flow data reviewed and released in September 2019 (WINFAP Files v8).
