About this gauge

The ultrasonic gauging station is located in the lower River Stort, a tributary in the upper River Lee catchment. Flows summed with Rye Bridge to generate Feildes Weir flows.

The catchment

Chalk headwaters, London Clay dominates lower catchment (considerable Drift cover). Rural upper catchment, substantial urban development (including Harlow & Bishops Stortford) in the valley.

Multipath ultrasonic (cross-path superseded single-path device). River maintained by Canal and River Trust.

How it measures flow

All but exceptional floods contained. Very low velocities (canalised river) hampered calibration and make low flow gauging difficult. Located immediately upstream of the confluence with the Lee at Feildes Weir with backing up when flows are high. Level measured by pressure transducer and radar in the stilling well.

Flow regime

Limited net impact of artificial influences but substantial gw abstraction in headwaters (a proportion is exported).
