The catchment
Pervious (Chalk) headwaters, mainly London Clay in lowest reaches. Land use mainly agricultural but the Pincey Brook drains Stansted Airport and Hatfield Forest.
The station
Flat V weir (1:10.9 cross-slope) 4.02m wide. Removed from peak flows dataset in September 2023 (WINFAP Files v12).
How it measures flow
Bypassing occurs at high flows (e.g. Oct 2001 flood). Flows > 17 cumecs exceed the capacity of the structure. At tail recorder was added in February 2011, to account for issues with non-modular flow. Non-modularity may have been increasing during the period of record. Flows derived from standard Flat V calculation. Rating is accurate, though more gauging is required to validate high flow range (no current meter readings above 0.6m). All flow is within bank, but by-passing does occur during floods.
Flow regime
Flows reduced by public water supply abstraction. Spray irrigation can be significant (especially in the upper part of the catchment). Balancing ponds at Stansted Airport provide some headwater regulation.

Data for period of record re-processed to correct for non-modularity. In the peak flow data, this correction has only been applied for 1982 onwards. For the daily flow data relevant modern levels of non-modularity were utilised to derive reprocessed flows.
