More detail

The catchment

The upper catchment drains Devonian slates (variously affected by the granite) and the Bodmin Moor Granite. Lower catchment drains Devonian slates and grits. Land use is moorland and low grade agriculture and grazing. No major changes in catchment.

The station

Cross path ultrasonic gauge attached to 15m high bridge abutments in a deep section of river, also held up by a stable shoal downstream. A replacement for Denby (49001) 2.5 miles downstream which closed in March 2019.

How it measures flow

A full range site opened in 2015. High flows should be mostly contained although bypassing is possible via a disused leat which flows through the embankment from the floodplain upstream. Low flow sensitivity is maintained by a stable shoal downstream. Flow data is currently derived from a rating developed from spot flow gaugings up to 2.241m/ 33.2 cumecs. The rating will be a back up data source when the flow record is direct from the ultrasonic. Paths can be impacted by aeration within the section at higher flows.

Flow regime

Crowdy Reservoir in the north-east of the catchment affects runoff. Runoff reduced by Public Water Supply abstraction. Sewage effluent returns from Bodmin.

4 periods of missing data in 2016/7 related to equipment/ power failures during the station developmental phase. This data will be infilled in the near future using Denby as a donor site.
