The catchment

Bulk of the river system rises on Dartmoor Granite moorland, and traverses a complex of Devonian and Carboniferous shales, sandstones and cherts before its wide alluvial valley crosses Tertiary sands and clays. Land use is low-grade agriculture and woodland.

The station

Ultrasonic station immediately upstream of a single-span road bridge. Channel is 19m wide, good straight approach and exit. Initially built for Water Resources as a replacement for Preston Gauging Station (46002) with a sister site at Bovey Parke (46013), now a multifunctional site. Station added to peak flows dataset in October 2018 (WINFAP Files v7).

How it measures flow

The first floods of each autumn typically bring lots of debris (leaves) which can cause some problems with the velocity measurement. This is addressed in post-processing as required. The channel cross section is not stable (frequent shoaling). This is addressed by undertaking regular cross section surveys.

Flow regime

Four reservoirs and various water reclamation works have minor affect on low flow regime.
