The catchment

Moderate relief catchment near headwaters of Maun. Rises on Magnesian Limestone and crosses onto Sherwood S'st. Heavily urbanised with Mansfield and Sutton in Ashfield immediately u/s.

The station

Crump profile Flat V (1:10) weir, 4.8m wide, low vertical wingwalls set in wider channel. Lb at about 2m, Rb higher. Weir prone to u/s siltation - sand is mobile, especially under high flow conditions and is washed away in high events - results in variable levels and scatter in gaugings. Replaced 28059 Mansfield - old site was replaced due to drowning of the flume and accumulation of rubbish. Structure situated downstream of sewage works in Mansfield.

How it measures flow

Flows are derived from the Flat-V Theoretical equation throughout the full flow range. Mobilisation of sand results in variable levels, scatter in gaugings. Difficult to gauge above 0.4mASD due to very flashy response; difficult to catch events. Structure becomes non-modular at high flows.

Flow regime

Urbanised catchment. Very responsive to rainfall, very rapid rise and fall in the hydrograph. Low flows dominated by sewage effluent and augmented by runoff from urban area that effectively increases catchment area. Very atypical water balance. Second rise in flood hydrograph often follows initial peak from urban runoff, as flows from the rural upper catchment move downstream.
