The catchment
Large, predominantly upland catchment draining Millstone Grit and Carboniferous Limestone. Lower reaches drain Coal Measures on the Lb and Triassic sandstones and marls on the Rb. Peat moorland headwaters; forestry, pasture and some arable. Contains the towns of Matlock and Buxton.
The station
Ten-channel, interleaved cross path US gauge in the centre of Derby, 0.5km upstream of Longbridge Weir (28010) which it replaced. Opened in 1984, ultrasonic gauge reconfigured in March 1993. Record combined with 28010 (a long, curved broad-crested masonry weir with complex rating history, very insensitive).
How it measures flow
Negligible bypassing. Two ratings shown are applied to Longbridge Weir record, the most recent valid from August 1970 when the weir was narrowed. Station is ultrasonic thereafter.
Flow regime
Substantial flow modification owing to Derwent reservoirs, mill operations (particularly before 1970s), and PWS abstractions.
The flow record
Following statistical assessment of continuity, mean and peak flow record shown are a combination of 28010 (Longbridge Weir) to 1986, and St Marys Bridge thereafter; POT thresholds prior to merge were 105.667 and 69.256 cumecs respectively. Chart and UKCEH POT date ranges are for 28010. Some Longbridge AMAX events pre-1985 are of a smaller magnitude than daily mean flows as instantaneous data have been re-processed following rating review. Continuous 15-minute data are awaiting digitisation and re-processing. Full period of record peak flow data reviewed and released in September 2022 (WINFAP Files v11).
