The catchment
Catchment rises on Magnesian Limestone with subordinant Permian Marl; mainly underlain by Sherwood Sandstone. Predominantly rural; part of Bolsover and Shirebrook in headwaters.
The station
Station sites where Poulter leaves Sherwood Sandstone outcrop. Original 4.88m wide Crump profile weir submerged from late 1972 by mining subsidence; channel regraded in 1981, but no solution. Ultrasonic gauge installed in 1992 revived the station and was replaced by a LaserFlow gauge in October 2017.

Laserflow capable of measuring full range of flows. Extreme high flows suspect due to backing up from River Idle and inaccessibility for gauging.

Minor augmentation from sewage; inline lakes in Clumber and Welbeck Parks ensure sluggish response.

Periods of missing data from 2007 until 2009 due to difficulties with ultrasonic gauge. Early flow record for the ultrasonic gauge did not measure bypass flow. Further periods of suspect data and edited data from 2015-2019 due to measurement problems. The laser flow gauge post 2019 measures the full range of flows to a better standard.
