The catchment
Moderate catchment relief, significant urban fraction in upper catchment (Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme). Keuper Marl. Rural except for Potteries.
The station
Velocity area station with broad floodplain. Removed from peak flows dataset in May 2016 (WINFAP Files v4).
How it measures flow
High flows measured by current meter from bridge - all flows contained through bridge. Station suffers from a shifting downstream control and bed movements have rendered the site unsuitable for the processing of flows in recent years, with lots of variation evident in the gaugings taken. The station has a broad floodplain on the left bank and out of bank flows occur readily. A canal aqueduct downstream of the site may control flood levels and flows. Wide scatter is evident in spot gaugings at all levels.
